Check out this beautiful British volume of Little Women

A reader was inquiring about this edition of Little Women as it has no date. Perhaps one of you has seen this edition and can comment about it. It would appear that it is not the first British edition to come out because it mentions that Louisa is the author of Good Wives, which was the title of the second part of Little Women.

My thanks to Ashley for allowing me to share this with you:

Possible news and an apology

A quick note of apology as to the lack of posts of late: after four manic months of research (some of the most fun I’ve had in years … hmmm, that sounds pathetic! :-)) I started writing my Lizzie book and completed the first draft of the introduction. But, in the midst of all that, a very exciting professional opportunity has presented itself! I can’t say yet what it is as nothing is definite, only that it will keep me quite busy. As soon as I know more, I will share with you. And in the meantime, I will try to post  more often.

I have ideas for posts but perhaps there is something you’d like me to post about. Leave a comment and let me know – this blog is for you.

  1. I love old illustrations for the Little Women. Are there more color plates in this book? Can you find the name of the illustrator. (And I do wish English books had a copyright date, as American ones do.)

  2. I’m wondering if the illustrator is listed, too. That might help pin it down. Also, it’s my understanding that Little Women was published as two volumes (Little Women and Good Wives) in the UK for a long while. -beth 🙂

  3. I’m so thrilled to know that you are writing a book I about Lizzie! She is my favorite of the Alcott sisters. I fear too often that she is the most overlooked of the four sisters and the most misunderstood. Thanks so much for what you are doing to bring her to greater prominence.

    1. Thanks for the vote of confidence! It’ll be a while yet before it’s done, especially if this other thing comes through, but it will get done. I’m dying to share what I’ve found out.

    2. Hello I was just wondering if anyone ever found out the date that this book was published because I have one similar and would love to know

  4. That’s a nice one. I almost purchased an illustrated British edition of Little Women on my vacation in England. It was a reprint though and not an original from the period that I collect and I didn’t like the illustrations. Plus my suitcase was close to bursting.

  5. I have the same copy of this book. It was my grandmothers and has her name and date, 1925 written inside. Do you know if this book has any value, other than sentimental- of course.
